There are one hundred and fifty organs
in the human body. I know, I've counted them.
Under "Anatomy, Human" in the en-
     cyclopedia, eleven colour transparencies,
each another layer of human tissue, each
revealing more green and yellow and red
and blue organs and veins and arteries
and muscles. I began with Plate B (Plate
A still had the skin on): abdominal mus-
     cles, lingual canal, intercostal muscles,
     spleen, pituitary gland, kidney . . . .
The plastic thin and wrinkling between my
fingers. Plate F shows the most dense area
of organ development: the chambers of
the heart with arrows indicating the dir-
ection of blood flow, blue for the oxygen-
rich arteries carrying blood out from the
heart, red for the veins sending it back
to be replenished. Appendix, aorta, esoph-
     agus, interventicular septum, colon, pan-
creas . . . . Coiling green and yellow shapes
like particoloured worms, the body full to
bursting with worms and arrows indicating
     the direction of blood flow.
